Coking coal: Production

Who digs the coal behind the world's steel

Who digs the coal behind the world's steel What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

World Mining Data puts 2024 output at 1,050 million tonnes, little changed from 1,038 million in 2020. Smil gives a similar figure, just above 1 billion tonnes, for 2013. China mines 49%, Australia 13%, Russia 10%, Mongolia 7%, and India and the US about 6% each. The HHI of 2,849 is high, driven by China, which uses nearly all its own output. Seaborne supply is a different picture: Australia exported 154 of its 158 million tonnes in 2013 (Smil). The US, Canada and Russia follow, and Mongolia trucks and rails coal into China.
