Coking coal: Overview
Coke, injection coal and coal-tar by-products
What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.Key uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blast-furnace coke | 64% | about 670 Mt of coking coal a year (range roughly 520-870 Mt)basis | Coke is the only material that does three jobs at once in a blast furnace: it burns to supply heat, makes the carbon monoxide that strips oxygen from iron ore, and stays strong enough at 1,500 C to hold up a 30 m column of ore so gas can rise through it. Only certain coals soften and re-solidify into such strong coke. Smil (2016) Still the Iron Age; USGS MCS 2026 Iron and Steel; World Mining Data 2026 (share derived, indicative) | Pulverised coal injection (replaces up to about 200 kg/t of coke) Natural gas or hydrogen in direct reduction (DRI) plus electric furnaces Scrap-based electric arc furnaces Charcoal in small furnaces (Brazil) |
| Pulverised coal injection (PCI) into blast furnaces | 20% | about 210 Mt a year (range roughly 170-260 Mt)basis | Injecting ground coal through the tuyeres replaces part of the coke at roughly a 1:1 rate, and PCI coal cost only 35-45% as much as coke per tonne in US experience (Smil). Low-volatile PCI coals from Australia and Russia are sold as part of the metallurgical coal market. Smil (2016) Still the Iron Age (share derived, indicative) | More coke Natural gas injection Hydrogen or biomass injection (trials) |
| Foundry coke and non-blast-furnace coke (ferroalloys, non-ferrous smelting, chemicals) | n/a | part of a residual of about 170 Mt (16%) of 2024 output, not split by use in sources checkedbasis | Foundry coke is made in longer 25-30 hour cycles for cupola furnaces that melt cast iron (Smil). Ferroalloy, phosphorus and calcium carbide producers use smaller coke grades as a reductant. Smil (2016); share indicative | Induction furnaces for foundries Anthracite and petcoke for some reductant uses Charcoal |
| Coke-oven by-products (gas, tar, benzol, ammonia) | n/a | per t of coal: 300-350 m3 of coke-oven gas, 30-45 L of tar, 10-13 L of ammonium sulphatebasis | This is not a separate use of coal but a valuable co-product stream. Coke-oven gas fires steel-plant reheating furnaces and power plants; tar feeds pitch for aluminium anodes and carbon products. Smil (2016) Still the Iron Age | Natural gas for plant heating Petroleum pitch for anodes |
| Blending into thermal coal or power (off-spec metallurgical coal) | n/a | n/a basis | When steel demand weakens, semi-soft and off-spec metallurgical coals are sold to power plants, which ties the bottom of the coking coal market to thermal coal prices. Industry practice | Steam coal |
From mine to user
- Exploration and resource definition Drilling tests not just tonnage but coking properties (volatile matter, fluidity, coke strength after reaction). Only a small part of world coal resources can make strong coke.
- Mining Open-cut and underground longwall mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin, British Columbia's Elk Valley, US Appalachia, Russia's Kuzbass, Mongolia's Tavan Tolgoi and China's Shanxi. World output was 1,050 Mt in 2024, 49% in China (World Mining Data 2026).
- Washing (coal preparation) Run-of-mine coal is crushed and washed in dense-medium and flotation circuits to cut ash, often to 8-10% for export grades; Indian coking coal is high-ash and needs heavy washing (indicative).
- Rail and seaborne shipping Unit trains run to Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay, Gladstone, Vancouver and Baltimore. Mongolia sends coal to China by truck and rail. India, Japan, South Korea and Europe import by sea.
- Blending and coke making Mills blend several coals and bake them at about 1,100 C for 15-18 hours in sealed ovens; one tonne of coal yields 600-800 kg of blast-furnace coke (Smil 2016).
- Ironmaking Coke and injected coal reduce iron ore in the blast furnace; world pig iron output was about 1,300 Mt in 2025, including 98 Mt in India (USGS MCS 2026).
- Steelmaking and end use Hot metal is converted to steel in basic oxygen furnaces and sold to construction, autos, machinery and pipes; world raw steel was about 1,900 Mt in 2025 (USGS MCS 2026).

World production 1.05 bn tonnes, 2024 Largest producer China 49.41% of worldThree things to know
- In 1709 Abraham Darby first fired a blast furnace with coke instead of charcoal, freeing ironmaking from wood (Conway).
- Between 1750 and 1770 the coke-smelted share of English pig iron rose from 10% to 46% (Smil).
- Each tonne of coal yields about 0.77 tonnes of coke; the rest is captured as gas and chemicals (Smil).
