Eggs: Movement

Why eggs rarely leave the country that lays them

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

Eggs travel badly, so most are eaten in the country that lays them. Exports of birds' eggs in shell (HS 0407, including hatching eggs) were worth $5.65 billion in 2024. The Netherlands led with 18.5%, followed by the United States (10.6%), Poland (9.1%), Turkey (8.2%) and Germany (5.9%). Germany was the largest importer at 18.3%, so much of the trade is short-haul within the EU. Hong Kong and Singapore, cities with little farmland, are big buyers. Bird-flu outbreaks trigger import bans on affected countries or regions.
