Eggs: Stocks
Why there is no such thing as an egg reserve
What this tab covers How much is left and how much is held. For minerals and energy: reserves, current output, years of supply and recycling for the top five countries. For farm commodities: production, ending stocks and stocks-to-use for the top five producers (USDA, October 2026). It also covers inventories and stockpiles.Recycling
Eggs are not recycled and are too perishable for strategic stocks. US ending stocks (mostly egg products) are forecast at 20 million dozen at end-2026, about one day of use (WASDE, Oct 2026). The layer flock is the real capital stock, and rebuilding it after culls takes months, because new pullets must be reared before they lay. India has no stockholding policy for eggs.
Eggs have no reserves and little storability. Fresh eggs last weeks under refrigeration. Dried or frozen egg products last longer but are a small part of supply. The real stock is the laying flock. When avian influenza forces culls, supply falls at once and takes months to rebuild, because replacement pullets must be hatched and reared. That is why outbreaks cause sharp local price spikes. There are no exchange-registered inventories either.
