Groundnuts: Movement

Why the biggest grower is also the biggest buyer

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

World exports of groundnuts (HS 1202, not roasted, in-shell or shelled) were worth only $3.9 billion in 2024, under a tenth of maize. Argentina supplied 22.7%, India 21.4%, the United States 16.1%, Brazil 9.2%, the Netherlands 7.7% and China 5.9%. China was also the largest importer (17.3%), followed by the Netherlands (15.2%), Indonesia (10.2%), Mexico (6.5%), Germany (6.2%) and the UK (5.0%). The Netherlands appears on both sides because Rotterdam is Europe's hub for importing, blanching and re-exporting nuts. Strict EU aflatoxin limits regularly lead to rejected cargoes.
