Pork: Production
Why a virus stalled the world's pork supply for a decade
Why a virus stalled the world's pork supply for a decade What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.FAOSTAT puts 2024 pig meat output at about 125.4 million tonnes, up from 69.7 million in 1990. Output stalled between 2010 (108.1 million) and 2020 (108.7 million), as African swine fever destroyed much of China's herd from 2018. It has since recovered by about 15%. China alone produces 45.5%, far ahead of the United States (10.1%), Brazil, Spain, Russia and Germany. The HHI of 2,266 signals moderate concentration, unusual for a farm product and driven by China's sheer size.
