Sunflower: Movement

Why the second-biggest exporter is missing from the data

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

World sunflower oil exports (HS 1512) were worth $13.3 billion in 2024 (Comtrade). Ukraine shipped 38.6% of export value; Russia, the other top exporter, does not report its trade, so it is missing from these shares. Turkey (9.7%) and the Netherlands (6.8%) largely refine and re-export. India took 22.3% of imports, Turkey 8.1% and Belgium 6.8%. Oil dominates trade because Russia and Ukraine crush at home and tax seed exports. Cargoes pass the Turkish Straits. In 1967 Soviet sunflower oil, bartered for Iranian gas, displaced US soybean oil in Iran (Morgan, pdf p. 186).
