Sunflower: Trading
No futures, so prices come from Black Sea ports
What this tab covers How and where it is bought and sold: who buys and sells, exchanges and benchmarks, contract types, the big trading houses and how prices are discovered. There is no liquid sunflower futures market. Seed and oil trade on physical contracts, priced FOB Black Sea ports and assessed by price-reporting agencies such as Argus and Fastmarkets. Grain merchants treat sunflower seed, rapeseed and soybeans as cover for one another, because all respond to the same price pressures (Morgan, pdf p. 294). Large Ukrainian and Russian agribusinesses and global merchants dominate exports. Russia uses floating export duties on sunflower oil and seed to keep domestic prices down.
Where it is bought (buyers)
- Indian refiners (AWL, Cargill India and others) buy crude sunflower oil CIF west and east coast ports, mainly from Russia, Ukraine and Argentina
- EU, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Egypt and China buy oil; China, the EU and Turkey buy meal
- Turkish crushers import seed (1.6 Mt in 2025/26, USDA) and re-export oil
Where it is sold (sellers)
- Russian crushers (EFKO, Yug Rusi and others) and multinationals export from Novorossiysk and Azov ports
- Ukrainian crushers (Kernel, Bunge, Cargill, LDC) export via Odesa-region ports
- Argentine crushers export from Rosario-area ports
