Tobacco: Characteristics

Nicotine, sugar and chlorides: the chemistry of leaf grades

What this tab covers The supply and physical characteristics of the commodity. Supply: current production, inventories and stocks, capacity utilisation, geographic and producer concentration, how fast supply responds to price, the project pipeline and capital spending, and logistics and export flows. Material: the physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and end uses (for example purity and conductivity for metals, API gravity, sulfur and energy content for fuels, moisture, protein and fibre quality for crops).

Supply volume characteristics

CharacteristicFigureWhat it meansSource
Current production volume6.05 Mt of unmanufactured tobacco (2024)Output is below the 7.14 Mt of 1990 but up from 5.80 Mt in 2020. Global leaf output fell nearly 19% between 2012 and 2024.FAOSTAT 2024; Tobacco Insider
Inventory and stock levelsnot published; leaf is aged one to two yearsMerchants and manufacturers hold packed leaf for ageing, so working stocks equal one to two years of use. TIMB cited higher carry-over stocks as a reason for lower 2026 prices in Zimbabwe. China's monopoly holds large stocks. India has no public stockholding.EquityAxis citing TIMB, Aug 2026; content_v2 tobacco stocks
Capacity utilisationAndhra Pradesh FCV output about 240 million kg against 142 million kg authorised (about 169%) in 2025-26India controls FCV supply through authorised crop sizes. Overproduction in Andhra Pradesh pushed auction prices down to Rs 219.50/kg in mid-2026, and an 81 million kg cap (a 43% cut) is proposed for 2026-27. World threshing and redrying utilisation is not published.Telangana Today, July 2026; Global Agriculture, Aug 2026
Geographic and producer concentrationChina 37.3%, top-3 (China, India, Brazil) 59.9%, HHI 1,738; exports: Brazil 21.8%China's crop is grown under the state monopoly and used at home. Manufacturing is highly concentrated: China National Tobacco, PMI, BAT, JT and Imperial dominate. PMI shipped 786.5 billion units in 2025. A combined share is not published in the sources used.FAOSTAT 2024; UN Comtrade 2024; PMI 2025
Supply elasticityhigh: annual crop, area can change each seasonZimbabwe sold a record 358.4 million kg by August 2026 after strong prices in 2025, and grower prices then fell 25% to $2.49/kg. Regulation (Indian crop caps, Chinese quotas) limits the response.EquityAxis citing TIMB, Aug 2026
Project pipeline and CapExno capacity expansion; policy is tightening supplyIndia proposes cutting Andhra Pradesh's FCV cap to 81 million kg for 2026-27. Brazilian exports fell 15.9% in the first half of 2026. CapEx figures are not published.Global Agriculture, Aug 2026; Tobacco Insider, Sep 2026
Logistics and export flowsworld leaf exports worth $12.7 billion (2024); Brazil shipped 561,000 t in 2025Packed leaf moves in cartons in containers from Rio Grande, Beira and Durban (for Zimbabwe and Malawi), Chennai and Krishnapatnam. Landlocked Zimbabwe and Malawi depend on rail and road to Mozambican and South African ports.UN Comtrade 2024; Tobacco Insider

Material characteristics Agricultural / soft commodity

Tobacco leaf is bought by type (flue-cured, burley, oriental), stalk position and grade. Chemistry matters most: nicotine sets strength, sugars set smoothness and flavour, and chlorides affect how well the leaf burns. Moisture must be controlled at packing so leaf ages without mould.

PropertyValue / specificationWhy it mattersSource
Nicotineroughly 1.5-3.5% in flue-cured leaf; often higher in burleyBlenders balance strength across grades; regulation in some markets caps yields per cigarettetobacco science literature (indicative)
Reducing sugarshigh in flue-cured Virginia (often 10-25%), very low in burleySets smoothness and flavour; drives the choice between Virginia and American blendstobacco science literature (indicative)
Moisture at packingabout 11-13% after redryingToo wet moulds during ageing; too dry shatterstrade practice (indicative)
Chlorideskept low, around 1% or lessHigh chloride leaf burns poorlytobacco science literature (indicative)
Grade and stalk positiongraded by plant position (lugs, cutters, leaf, tips), colour and quality, e.g. Tobacco Board and US grade codesSets auction price; middle leaves usually earn the mostTobacco Board of India; USDA grade standards
