Tobacco: Production
Why the world grows less tobacco than in 1990
What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.FAOSTAT records 6.05 million tonnes of unmanufactured tobacco in 2024, below 7.14 million in 1990 but up from 5.80 million in 2020. China grew 37.3%, India 12.0%, Brazil 10.5%, Indonesia 5.8% and Zimbabwe 3.9%. The HHI of 1,738 indicates moderate concentration, mostly because of China, whose crop is controlled by the state tobacco monopoly and largely used at home. Export supply looks different, led by Brazil, India, Zimbabwe, the United States and Malawi. The long decline reflects falling smoking in rich countries, partly offset by demand in Asia and Africa.
