Tobacco: Trading

Auction floors and contract farming, but no futures

What this tab covers How and where it is bought and sold: who buys and sells, exchanges and benchmarks, contract types, the big trading houses and how prices are discovered.

There is no tobacco futures market. Price discovery happens in two ways. Zimbabwe and Malawi still sell much of their crop through auction floors, alongside growing contract farming. Elsewhere, leaf merchants such as Universal and Pyxus, or manufacturers directly, contract with farmers for set grades, often supplying seed, inputs and credit. A handful of cigarette makers, plus China's monopoly, are the final buyers, so market power sits downstream. Taxes, not leaf, make up most of a cigarette's retail price, so leaf costs barely touch consumer demand.

Where it is bought (buyers)

  • Manufacturers (PMI, BAT, JT, Imperial, China National Tobacco) buy graded leaf through merchants or directly
  • Leaf merchants (Universal, Pyxus, ITC's leaf business) buy at Indian and Zimbabwean auctions and from contract growers
  • Chinese, German, Indonesian, Polish and US importers took the largest shares of import value in 2024

Where it is sold (sellers)

  • Indian FCV growers sell on Tobacco Board platforms in Andhra Pradesh (Prakasam, Nellore and Godavari areas) and Karnataka (Mysuru region)
  • Zimbabwe and Malawi growers sell on auction and contract floors
  • Brazilian growers sell under integrated contracts in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Parana
