Paraxylene: Relationships

Every element and industry that Paraxylene is linked to, and how. Each pair has its own card explaining the relationships between the two.

  • Crude oil: Paraxylene is separated from refinery reformate made from crude-derived naphtha, so crude sets its cost and producers earn the paraxylene to naphtha spread, which needs about $300 to 350 a tonne to pay. (researched)
  • Toluene: Toluene is the main swing feed for extra paraxylene: transalkylation and disproportionation units turn toluene, often mixed with heavier aromatics, into xylenes and benzene, and can more than double the paraxylene an aromatics complex makes from the same naphtha. Whether toluene goes there or into petrol depends on the spread between them. (researched)
