Paraxylene: Regulation

Why Chinese towns once marched against PX plants

What this tab covers How it is regulated and what could disrupt supply: hazard classification, rules in the EU, US and India, anti-dumping duties and other trade measures, and supply-risk notes.

Hazards

ClassificationUN numberKey risks
Flammable liquid cat 3; acute toxicity cat 4 (dermal, inhalation); skin irritation cat 2; aspiration hazard cat 1UN1307Flammable vapour; local opposition in China after 2007-2014 protests over PX plants (indicative).

Main rules

Trade measures

  • US tariffs on Chinese imports (10% pledged in early 2025, Argus) affect the downstream polyester chain more than PX itself.

Supply risk

China's dominance and refinery integration concentrate supply, but many exporters remain. Gulf PX exports and Asian naphtha supply were exposed to the 2026 Hormuz disruption. Not on critical lists.
