Gallium: Movement

Why US gallium arrives from Canada and Japan

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

There is no separate international trade code for gallium, which sits under HS 8112.92 with other minor metals, so flows are described from USGS import data. USGS shows US metal imports in 2021–24 from Canada (28%), Japan (22%), China (18%) and Germany (16%). Because China makes 99% of primary metal, other suppliers mostly refine or recycle. Gallium also travels inside products: the US imported about 110,000 kg (gross weight) of GaAs wafers in 2025. US metal imports more than doubled in 2025 to about 25,000 kg. The chokepoint is Chinese export licensing.

No distinct HS trade code for this commodity, so trade flows are not charted.
