Phosphate rock: Overview

How rock becomes the acid behind phosphate fertiliser

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Fertiliser: DAP, MAP, TSP, SSP and NPK complexes made via phosphoric acid86%about 215 Mt of phosphate rock a year (47.8 Mt P2O5 in fertilisers)basis Phosphorus is essential for root growth, energy transfer and seed formation and has no substitute in agriculture (USGS). Rock is too insoluble for most crops, so it is dissolved in sulphuric acid to phosphoric acid and combined with ammonia. DAP (18-46-0) packs nitrogen and phosphorus into one dense, storable granule, which is why it dominates trade and Indian farm use. EU CRM study 2023; USGS MCS 2026, Phosphate Rock None for the nutrient
Manure, compost and struvite recovered from wastewater (partial, local)
Direct application of ground reactive rock on acid soils
Animal feed phosphates (dicalcium and monocalcium phosphate)10%about 25 Mt of rock a year (indicative)basis Poultry and pigs cannot absorb enough phosphorus from plant feed, so purified calcium phosphates are added for bone growth. Feed grades need defluorinated acid, so they sell at a premium: Nutrien's industrial and feed phosphate fetched $835/t in 2025 against $677/t for fertiliser. EU CRM study 2023; Nutrien 2025 annual MD&A Phytase enzymes (reduce, do not replace, added phosphate)
Meat and bone meal where permitted
Detergents, food additives and industrial chemicals (purified phosphoric acid, phosphates)4%about 10 Mt of rock a year (indicative)basis Purified phosphoric acid and sodium phosphates are used in soft drinks, baking powder, metal treatment and water treatment. Phosphate detergents have been restricted in many countries because of algal blooms, shrinking this use. EU CRM study 2023 Zeolites and citrates in detergents
Citric acid in some foods
Elemental phosphorus for glyphosate herbicide, flame retardants and semiconductorsn/a n/a basis Thermal reduction of rock in electric furnaces gives white phosphorus, the starting point for phosphorus chlorides used in glyphosate, flame retardants and high-purity acid for chip etching. China, Kazakhstan and Vietnam dominate; the EU lists phosphorus as critical with China at 79% of processing. USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM study 2023 Few for glyphosate chemistry
Wet-process purified acid for some chemical uses
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cathodesn/a n/a basis LFP cathodes are cheaper and safer than nickel-based ones and use purified phosphoric acid or iron phosphate. Growth in Chinese EVs and grid storage has drawn phosphate producers into battery-grade chemicals, competing with fertiliser for high-quality acid. Indicative; no quantified source found Nickel-manganese-cobalt cathodes
Sodium-ion cathodes (some also phosphate-based)
End-use shares are EU shares (EU CRM 2023) applied to world rock output; they are indicative for the world. USGS gives world P2O5 use in fertiliser of 47.8 Mt in 2025, projected at 51.5 Mt in 2029.

From mine to user

  1. 1. Exploration and mine development Most rock is marine sedimentary phosphorite (Morocco, China, US, Middle East); igneous deposits exist in Brazil, Russia, Finland and South Africa. World reserves are 73,000 Mt, 68% of them in Morocco (USGS 2026).
  2. 2. Open-pit mining Draglines or shovels strip overburden and dig the phosphate bed. World output was about 250 Mt of marketable rock in 2025 (USGS).
  3. 3. Beneficiation Washing, screening, flotation and sometimes calcination raise grade to about 28-34% P2O5 marketable rock (indicative). US rock was valued at about $100/t f.o.b. mine in 2025 (USGS).
  4. 4. Phosphoric acid (wet process) Rock is digested with sulphuric acid, giving phosphoric acid and phosphogypsum waste. India imports both rock and phosphoric acid, mainly from Morocco and Jordan.
  5. 5. Fertiliser granulation Acid is reacted with ammonia to make DAP or MAP, or blended into NPKs; SSP is made by treating rock with acid directly. India produced 3.90 Mt of DAP and imported 6.22 Mt in FY2026 (Chambal MD&A).
  6. 6. Trade and shipping Rock, acid and finished DAP move in bulk; India took 40.4% of world rock import value in 2024 ($1.79 billion) (Comtrade).
  7. 7. Distribution and subsidy In India, P and K fertilisers are sold at controlled retail prices under the nutrient-based subsidy (NBS), with the government paying a per-kg subsidy for each nutrient. The Kharif 2026 allocation was about Rs 41,534 crore (Cabinet, April 2026).
  8. 8. Farm application India sold 9.40 Mt of DAP in FY2026 (Chambal MD&A), the most widely used phosphate fertiliser in the country.

Three things to know

  • Morocco holds 50 of the world's 73 billion tons of phosphate rock reserves (USGS 2026).
  • In 1974 Morocco's OCP raised its rock price from $14 to $63 per ton within six months (Radetzki & Warell).
  • The US imported over 99% of its phosphate rock from Peru in 2021-24 (USGS).
