Indore's rubbish, from doorstep to bus fuel
Follow one day of India's cleanest city's waste, from six-way sorting at home to bio-CNG, bales and EPR certificates.
A city that owns its rubbish
1,900 tIndore's waste generated per dayIndore Municipal Corporation carries the legal duty for what its 35 lakh residents throw away: about 700 tonnes of wet and 1,200 tonnes of dry waste a day. It sets the rules and charges and awards the contracts, and in 2025 Indore was named India's cleanest city for the eighth year running.1,5
Constraint Scale: Indian cities generate about 1.66 lakh tonnes a day and process about 1.33 lakh tonnes, or 80% (2025), so the rest still reaches dumps. 98%of Indore's waste segregated at sourceCollection vehicles with separate compartments call at every home and business, and residents hand over waste already split into six categories. In 2025 Indore was credited with 98% segregation at source and 100% door-to-door collection, which is what makes everything downstream work: clean wet waste for digesters and clean dry waste for sorting.1
Constraint Discipline is the bottleneck: segregation depends on daily household habits and enforcement, which few cities have matched. St SteelOil Crude oilLPG CNG, LPG and biogas distributionVehicles, ships, rail, aircraftSoftware and IT servicesDry waste sorted into bales
1,200 tdry waste sorted each dayThe 1,200 tonnes of daily dry waste goes to material recovery facilities, where conveyors, screens, magnets and sorting staff separate paper, plastics, metals and glass and press them into bales for sale. Indore was credited with 100% waste processing in 2025, so little is sent to landfill.1
Constraint Low-value multilayer and dirty plastics are hard to sell, so sorting pays only where recyclers or EPR certificates buy the output. PET PET resinLLDPE Polyethylene (LDPE, LLDPE)PP PolypropyleneAl AluminiumSt SteelMachinery and equipmentPlastics washed and re-melted
1,602registered plastic processors, Feb 2023Baled plastic goes to recyclers who shred, wash and extrude it into pellets for pipes, film or new packaging, while paper goes to mills and metal to smelters. By February 2023, 1,602 plastic waste processors had registered on the central EPR portal, where they sell recycling certificates to brand owners.2
Constraint Recyclate prices track virgin resin and oil, so cheap new plastic can make recycling uneconomic without certificate income. 17,000 kgbio-CNG a day, design outputWet waste feeds the GOBARdhan plant, designed in 2022 to digest 550 tonnes a day into about 17,000 kg of bio-CNG and 100 tonnes of compost; in 2026 it was reported to turn about 500 tonnes into 17 tonnes of gas. A private partner put in the ₹150 crore capital cost, and the city buys at least half the gas.3,1,7
Constraint Feedstock: digesters need clean, segregated organic waste, and the plant's 550-tonne design capacity is below Indore's 700 tonnes of daily wet waste. 100 acresreclaimed at the Devguradia dumpBefore the system worked, Indore's waste piled up at the Devguradia dump on the city's edge. Around 2018 the corporation bio-mined about 15 lakh tonnes of legacy waste with trommels, screens and more than 50 excavators and loaders, sold the recyclables, and reclaimed 100 acres of land it valued at about ₹300 crore.4,8,6
Constraint Legacy dumps are widespread: at least 33% of the world's municipal waste was not managed in an environmentally safe way in 2016. Kao Kaolin & claysHDPE High-density polyethyleneCaO LimeConstruction and infrastructureWater and sanitationBrand owners pay for their packaging
22.4 lakhtonnes a year of EPR obligation, 2023Under plastic packaging rules notified in February 2022, producers, importers and brand owners must buy recycling certificates covering the packaging they sell, with targets rising each year. By February 2023 about 5,000 of them had registered, with a combined obligation of 22.37 lakh tonnes a year.2,9
Constraint Rule risk: recycling targets rise from 30-50% in 2024-25 to 60-80% from 2027-28, and a March 2026 amendment reset recycled-content and reuse duties. Public administration, defence and securitySoftware and IT servicesWhat the chain shows
Indore shows waste becomes a resource when segregation at the door works; the opportunity is in biogas, recycling and EPR-backed sorting, the risk in municipal finances and shifting rules.
